“I recently rode the production model at the Lausitzring track, and I was blown away by how quick it was. The road version is barely slower than the race bike.”
Troy Corser, BMW Motorrad Days 2009
S1000RR Overview
Styling:
Standing out from the crowd: asymmetric, angular, aggressive, compact, ergonomic – and every inch a BMW.
Weight:
At just 206.5 kilograms when fully fuelled* and road ready, it is the lightest superbike in the 1,000-cc class with ABS.
Power-to-weight ratio:
The power-to-weight ratio of 1.05 kg/hp (without ABS) or 1.06 kg/hp (with ABS) is the best in its class.
Engine:
The lightest and most powerful engine in its class at just 59.8 kilograms. It offers outstanding performance – maximum output of 193 horsepower (142 kilowatts), and maximum torque of 112 newton-metres. Rocker arm technology ensures a wide rev range and maximum high-rev durability.
Four power modes:
Riders can switch between four power modes (Rain, Sport, Race and Slick) at the touch of a button. As well as adjusting the throttle responses, these also change the settings of the optional Race ABS and DTC systems.
Optional Race ABS, partially integral and switchable:
Weighs just 2.5 kilograms (competitor systems weigh up to 10 kilograms), and adapts to the power mode currently selected.
Optional Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), switchable:
Reduces rear wheelspin. Different settings for each of the four power modes increase performance on the racetrack and maximizes active safety. Only available in conjunction with the optional Race ABS.
Instruments:
The intuitive multifunctional instrument cluster incorporates racing features such as Race mode, gearshift prompts and a lap timer.
Launch mode:
Uses the gearshift prompt LEDs to help riders set the optimum revs for a racing start.
Suspension – rear spring strut:
The rear suspension spring strut is easily accessible. Both rebound and compression damping are adjustable between ten numbered settings, allowing it to be adapted quickly and precisely to the rider’s personal preferences.
Suspension – front forks:
An easily adjustable upside-down fork with a large (46-millimetre) stanchion diameter for optimum feedback and stability under braking. Here too, compression and rebound damping can be adjusted between ten settings on colour-coded scales.
Brakes:
Brembo four-piston radial-mounted fixed calipers provide massive stopping power for the double front discs.
Wheels:
Made of lightweight yet extremely stiff aluminium, in a 10-spoke design. Size (front): 120/70 ZR 17. Size (rear): 190/55 ZR 17.
Gearshift assist (optional):
Allows upshifting without using the clutch or lifting off the throttle, for minimal shift times (up to ten times quicker than the standard manual transmission) when accelerating.
Tank:
The extremely narrow and lightweight aluminium tank is unique in this class, weighing 1.5 kilograms less than competitor tanks. Capacity 17.5 litres (4 litres reserve).
Seat:
The involving, comfortable and forward-leaning seating position is ergonomically suited for riders of all sizes.
Windshield:
Strategically positioned gaps in the windshield significantly reduce air turbulence around the rider’s head.
Lights:
Headlight with dynamic asymmetric styling, for maximum illumination with minimum weight.
Mirrors:
Attached with two screws, they can easily be removed for track use.
Indicators and number plate holder:
Can be removed in seconds for track use, by undoing three screws and pulling out a plug.
Environmental impact:
Electronic engine management and two catalytic converters ensure the motorcycle meets the strictest emission standards (Euro 4).
*Filled with all operating fluids, fuelled to 100% of usable tank capacity.
